ALABAMA PHYSICAL THERAPISTS CELEBRATE NATIONAL PHYSICAL THERAPY MONTH WITH STATEWIDE BACKPACK SAFETY CAMPAIGN
________________________________________________________________

BIRMINGHAM, AL, October 7, 2008 – More than 50 physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students throughout the state of Alabama will be participating in a Backpack Safety Campaign for middle school parents and teachers throughout the month of October as part of the Alabama Physical Therapy Association’s (ALAPTA’s) National Physical Therapy Month celebration.
“Backpacks can cause problems when they are too heavy, worn improperly and packed incorrectly,” DavidMorris, PT, PhD Chapter president said. “These events will raise public awareness of problems associated with the incorrect use of backpacks, identify early warning signs, and offer practical solutions.” ALAPTA will be raffling 150 free backpacks as part of the campaign. Events are being planned for the Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham, Huntsville, and Eufala areas.
Physical therapists are health care professionals who diagnose and manage individuals of all ages, from newborns to elders, who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives. Physical therapists examine each individual and develop a plan of care using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. Physical therapists also work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.
The Alabama Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association is a statewide professional organization representing almost 790 members who are physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students. Its goal is to foster advancements in physical therapy practice, research, and education throughout Alabama. For more information, please visit http://ptalabama.org.
