Marilyn Gossman Professionalism in Physical Therapy Award
  • Purpose: To honor an APTA Alabama member demonstrating outstanding professionalism in any of the areas of physical therapy service, practice, education, and/or research.
  • Prerequisite Criteria: The nominee must:
    • Be an APTA Alabama member.
    • Have been engaged in the physical therapy profession for at least fifteen (15) years.
    • Have positively and substantially affected the shape, scope, and quality of physical therapy practice in Alabama.
    • Have had an impact on other physical therapy professionals in a manner that has significantly increased their abilities to practice physical therapy.
    • Not be a member of the Nominations and Awards Committee or Board of Directors.
  • Supportive Narrative:
    • Two (2) supportive narratives are preferred for each nominee. At least one (1) narrative must be from an APTA Alabama member who served on the Board of Directors.
    • The narratives should emphasize the nominee’s contributions to APTA Alabama and the community.
    • Specific examples are recommended to assist the Nominations and Awards Committee in the selection process.
  • Selection Process:
    • Nominations must be submitted by the advertised deadline.
    • The Nominations and Awards Committee will make the final selection and recommend to the Board of Directors.
  • Presentation: The recipient will receive an engraved plaque, which will be presented at the APTA Alabama Annual Business Meeting.
Barbara Bradford Leadership Award
  • Purpose: To recognize an APTA Alabama member who has made significant contributions resulting in Chapter growth as well as individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their service to APTA Alabama.
  • Prerequisite Criteria: The nominee must:
    • Be an APTA Alabama member.
    • Have served on an APTA Alabama committee for a minimum of two (2) years.
    • Not be a member of the Nominations and Awards Committee or Board of Directors.
  • Supportive Narrative:
    • Two (2) supportive narratives are preferred for each nominee. At least one (1) narrative must be from an APTA Alabama member who served on the Board of Directors concurrent with the nominee.
    • The narratives should emphasize the nominee’s contributions to APTA Alabama and/or the community in the area of leadership.
    • Specific examples are recommended to assist the Nominations and Awards Committee in the selection process.
    • Demonstrated vision, initiative, integrity, justice, teamwork, and acting as a mentor to develop future leaders are essential components.
  • Selection Process:
    • Nominations must be submitted by the advertised deadline.
    • The Nominations and Awards Committee will make the final selection and recommend to the Board of Directors.
  • Presentation: The recipient will receive an engraved plaque, which will be presented at the APTA Alabama Annual Business Meeting.
Governmental Affairs Award
  • Purpose: To recognize an APTA Alabama member most effective in positively representing the physical therapy profession through political activities influencing state or national legislation.
  • Prerequisite Criteria: The nominee must:
    • Be an APTA Alabama member.
    • Have worked with the Governmental Affairs Committee and/or APTA Alabama lobbyist.
    • Have participated in political activities that have directly influenced state and/or national legislation.
    • Not be a member of the Nominations and Awards Committee or Board of Directors.
  • Supportive Narrative:
    • Two (2) supportive narratives are preferred for each nominee. At least one (1) narrative must be from an APTA Alabama member who served on the Board of Directors and/or Governmental Affairs Committee.
    • The narratives should emphasize the nominee’s contributions to APTA Alabama and the community in the area of advocacy.
    • Specific examples are recommended to assist the Nominations and Awards Committee in the selection process.
    • Those examples should demonstrate effective implementation of a successful legislative strategy, building effective grassroots communication and advocacy networks, and/or developing legislative communication materials to raise legislator and public awareness.
  • Selection Process:
    • Nominations must be submitted by the advertised deadline.
    • The Nominations and Awards Committee will make the final selection and recommend to the Board of Directors.
  • Presentation: The recipient will receive an engraved plaque, which will be presented at the APTA Alabama Annual Business Meeting.
Innovations in Physical Therapy Award
  • Purpose: To honor a physical therapy professional or clinic demonstrating futuristic thinking through innovative programming.
  • Prerequisite Criteria: The nominee must:
    • Be an APTA Alabama member. Clinics nominated must employ at least one APTA Alabama member.
    • Demonstrate that activities have represented creative and effective solutions to problems interfering with the optimal delivery of physical therapy services.
    • Not be a member of the Nominations and Awards Committee or Board of Directors.
  • Supportive Narrative:
    • Two (2) supportive narratives are preferred for each nominee. At least one (1) narrative must be from an APTA Alabama member who served on the Board of Directors and/or Governmental Affairs Committee.
    • The narratives should emphasize the nominee’s innovations in the practice of physical therapy.
    • Specific examples are recommended to assist the Nominations and Awards Committee in the selection process.
  • Selection Process:
    • Nominations must be submitted by the advertised deadline.
    • The Nominations and Awards Committee will make the final selection and recommend to the Board of Directors.

Physical Therapy Advocate Award
  • Purpose: To recognize an individual outside of the profession whose activities promote and elevate the practice of physical therapy.
  • Prerequisite Criteria: The nominee must:
    • Not be a licensed physical therapist or physical therapist assistant.
    • Nominees must have participated in activities that facilitate the delivery of effective physical therapy services and/or enhance public awareness of physical therapy.
  • Supportive Narrative:
    • Two (2) supportive narratives are preferred for each nominee. At least one (1) narrative must be from an APTA Alabama member who served on the Board of Directors and/or Governmental Affairs Committee.
    • The narratives should emphasize the nominee’s contributions to the physical therapy profession and the community in area of advocacy.
    • Specific examples are recommended to assist the Nominations and Awards Committee in the selection process.
